Manicure in Amsterdam: 7 Party-Season Nail Mistakes (and How to Dodge Them)

Your outfit is sorted, the shoes are broken in, the playlist is ready – and then you lift a glass of bubbles and ten chipped nails wave back at you.

Every December our De Pijp salon sees the same handful of nail mistakes. So if you're planning a manicure in Amsterdam before the holidays, consider this your friendly cheat sheet: seven mistakes, seven easy fixes, zero lectures.

Why a Manicure in Amsterdam Needs a Winter Plan

Amsterdam winters are quietly brutal on hands. Think icy wind on the bike, dry central heating, constant handwashing, gift-wrapping marathons and cooking for a houseful of guests.

All of that dries out nails and cuticles and makes any manicure work harder. A little planning is the difference between nails that look fresh at the party and nails that gave up two days before it.

The 7 Party-Season Nail Mistakes

1. Booking the week of the party

December agendas fill up fast – yours, ours, everyone's. Leave it to the last minute and you end up choosing between a slot that doesn't fit and no manicure at all.

The fix: book now, and aim for an appointment one to three days before your big event. Fresh enough to look perfect, early enough that you're not sprinting from the salon to the party.

2. Trying a dramatic new shape for one night

Long stiletto nails look incredible in photos. They feel a little less incredible when you're typing, zipping a dress or opening presents with them for the first time.

The fix: go one step bolder, not five. Tell your nail technician what your hands actually do all day, and let them suggest a length and shape you'll still love on 2 January.

3. Peeling off gel or BIAB yourself

We get it – a lifted corner is very tempting. But peeling takes layers of your natural nail with it, leaving thin, bendy nails just in time for the new year.

The fix: if something lifts, keep your hands off it and book a proper removal or refill. Your future nails will thank you.

4. Forgetting cuticle oil

Dry cuticles are the fastest way to make even a fresh manicure look tired. Central heating doesn't help.

The fix: a drop of cuticle oil every evening and hand cream after washing. Keep both by the bed and in your bag – the habit sticks when the bottle is in sight.

5. Using your nails as tools

Peeling tape, scraping off price stickers, opening cans, chipping frost off the bike seat – nails are not a Swiss Army knife, no matter how strong they feel.

The fix: use the pads of your fingers, and keep scissors right next to the wrapping paper.

6. Skipping the gloves

The most dangerous moment for a party manicure is often the morning after: a sink full of glasses and a bottle of cleaning spray. Hot water and detergents dry out nails and skin.

The fix: rubber gloves for the dishes, warm gloves for the ride home. Two pairs of gloves, one very happy manicure.

7. Forgetting about your feet

Boots all winter means feet tend to be out of sight, out of mind – until New Year's Eve calls for open heels, or a winter sun trip appears on the calendar.

The fix: pair your manicure with a pedicure in the same visit. One appointment, everything sorted.

BIAB or Classic Manicure for Party Season?

Both are lovely – they just suit different Decembers.

  • BIAB: builds a strengthening layer over your natural nails. Great if your nails are soft or bendy, or if your hands need to survive a full month of parties, gifts and dishes.

  • Classic manicure: shaped nails, neat cuticles and a polished finish. Perfect if you prefer a lighter, more natural feel or simply love changing your colour often.

Our verdict: if your calendar has more than a couple of events this month, BIAB is the stress-free choice. If you have one big night and like to keep it simple, a classic manicure booked close to the date does the job beautifully.

Not sure? Ask during your appointment – we'll look at your nails and tell you honestly what will last.

Your 30-Second Party Nail Checklist

  • Appointment booked one to three days before the event

  • Shape and length you can live with for a few weeks

  • Cuticle oil on the nightstand

  • Rubber gloves next to the sink

  • Scissors next to the wrapping paper

  • Feet checked if open shoes or a trip are on the way
